✴️ 600 years of Roman troops and 450 years of call to prayer from the Ottoman muezzins

Tulcea is part of a unique region in Romania, Dobrogea, known in antiquity as Scythia Minor. Here the Roman troops lingered for more than 600 years. The Slavs also passed through here to the south, later forming Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia and all the Slavic states south of the Danube. Here the call to prayer of the Ottoman muezzins was heard for 450 years; it was also here, in the heart of the Delta, that the Russian rebels hid after the religious reforms of the Russian Orthodox Church in the eighteenth century and thousands of Aromanians from the Balkans came here, after this territory became part of the Kingdom of Romania.

✴️ The first monastery in Romania was in Tulcea County

In Tulcea County, every step tells a surprising story. Some of the oldest mountains in Europe, the Macin Mountains, are located here. Also here you can find Ottoman mosques (Azizyie and Ali-Gazi Pasha), castra and ancient fortresses built by the Greeks, Romans and Byzantines - Troesmis, Noviodunum (headquarters of the Roman fleet on the Danube - Classis Flavia Moesica), Dinogetia, Halmyris, Aegyssus (the fortress of the seven towers, which controlled access to the Danube), Beroe, Orgame/Argamum (a locality founded by the same Greeks who laid the foundations of Histria,  in the VII century B.C.), Ibidia (the place where the first early Christian monastery in Romania was identified), Enisala and others.

Here you can also find the first early Christian basilicas in Romania – Niculițel, Halmyris. Did you know that in the crypt of the church in Halmyris (4th century) - Murighiol is remembered Bishop Evangelicus, from Tomis, the first Christian hierarch known on the territory of our country?

✴️ The miracle of the Delta: its people

Tulcea is on the lips of many travelers who come to discover the fascinating Danube Delta, a UNESCO monument, about which the late Prince Philip of Great Britain said: "I never imagined that at such a short distance from London there is something so beautiful". Although he was only supposed to spend 30 minutes on the canals of the Delta, Prince Philip spent in the Delta, to his great displeasure, only an hour and a half.

Its stories continue to be passed down from generation to generation, in isolated fishing villages, by Russians, Romanians, Greeks or Turks, where time and the turbulent history of Dobrogea seem to have stopped. These are places where you can listen to fascinating stories, in the shade of traditional reed-covered households. Some stories are gloomy, about communist penal colonies, while others tell us about life in harmony with nature and the ancestral traditions of fishermen.
